Not Guilty By Insanity Verdict For Woman’s Assault and Hit & Run Charges

Oct 26, 2016 by Mike McKneely in Assault

It is a sad reality that some individuals that would be better suited for mental health treatment are often caught up and punished in California’s criminal justice system. This was the case for a Fresno woman who found herself in a precarious legal position after the effects of her previously diagnosed illness resulted in an unfortunate situation and several criminal charges. The woman who had long battled bipolar disorder drove her car through the entrance gate of a secure government facility. Her erratic behavior was misinterpreted as threatening and when the police responded, the woman was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, and a hit and run. Since the woman was now faced with the possibility of spending extensive time in prison in addition to suffering the collateral consequences of a criminal conviction, her family searched for qualified Fresno criminal defense attorneys. This led her to Fresno’s Michael McKneely, Criminal Defense Lawyer, based on Michael McKneely’s experience as an advocate for individuals with mental health issues.

Attorney McKneely took the woman’s case and used his experience in this area to resolve the case on favorable terms. After arguing on her behalf, explaining his client’s circumstances, as well as presenting evidence related to her documented mental illness, the court found that she was not guilty by reason of insanity and placed this deserving client in a proper treatment program. Once she completes her requirements, this unfortunate incident, and the charges will be removed from her record.

The outcome of an individual case depends on a variety of factors unique to that case. Case results do not guarantee or predict a similar result in any similar or future case.
